Cocker Spaniels first came to America on the Mayflower in 1620.
They were developed as a woodcock (hence the name, Cocker) hunting spaniel and were the most popular dog breed in the united states in the 1940s, 50s, and again in the 1980s.
In the 20th century, differing breed standards in the US and UK was the cause of the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel being registered as separate breeds, first by the AKC in 1946, and later in 1970 by the UK Kennel Club.
