Curly-Coated Retriever

Limited Australian Labradoodle foundation infusion-genes are still present in Australian Cobberdogs

  • Curlies are an old Retriever breed originating in England.
  • Bred for fur and feather retrieving, they are a large intelligent breed requiring exercise every day.
  • They can sometimes be mistaken for a labrador and poodle cross because of their large build and curly coat.
  • These Retrievers are loyal affectionate companions with their families and bond well, but can be aloof and wary of strangers, a trait that limited the Curlies use in the creation of the Australian Labradoodle.
  • Curly-Coated Retrievers have been purebred since the early 1900s, and although their exact origin is not known, it's likely they descended from Newfoundland Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels, Poodles, and several extinct dog breeds.
  • This breed is also a contributor to the improper coat gene that still pops up from time to time in the Australian Labradoodle, and Australian Cobberdog breeds.
