labrador retriever

Native retriever of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In the 1830's the progenitors of the breed were imported to Europe for use as gun dogs, and went on to create other types of retrievers such as the Golden Retriever in Scotland. Labs are still the most popular breed of dog in Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States.

  • Labs are frequently trained to aid people with blindness. They are also great therapy animals for people who are not allergic to dog hair that have autism, or anxiety.
  • They are best known for their loyalty, and playfulness, and are prized sporting and hunting dogs
  • Labs directly descended from the St. John's Water Dog, (pictured right) a now extinct landrace (a dog bred for a purpose, not pedigree or appearance) of domestic dog from Newfoundland. The St. John's Water Dog was the favorite dog of fishermen because of their extraordinary good temperament and working behaviour. The tuxedo coat that sometimes shows up in black or chocolate labs is a distant reminder of is origins from the St John's Water Dog. This breed was also the common ancestor of the Newfoundland dog, Landseer dog, Curly-Coated Retriever, Flat-Coated Retriever, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Golden Retriever.
